Dependent Arising is an exhibition of assemblages that examine female identity, materiality and consumption. By re-contextualizes concrete, steel, wood, handmade paper, and found objects into abstract minimalist forms I seek to evoke the sense of the familiar while challenging the performative function of these materials.
From March 2021 - February 2022 I culled, then processed my paper and fiber waste into handmade paper, totalling 830 sheets.
This project became a visual representation of my daily habits and consumption — RECEIPTS, food boxes, shipping cardboard, holiday cards, sketchbooks, student work, Covid-19 Vaccination Band- Aids, server notepads and so on.
Each steel and concrete pedestal holds one month of “waste”.
The intention of this project was to document, then curb my consumption.
Through discovery, handmade paper became a representation of unseen labor and resource depletion.
While trying to reduce my contribution to landfills, I estimate to have used 900 gallons of fresh water - which I find DEVASTATING.
Begging the questions — how does each decision we make impact our environment?
